iKyp demonstrates ‘Safety First’ at Shell

Shell Downstream, a division of Royal Dutch Shell plc, which operates the Group’s manufacturing, distribution and marketing activities for oil products and chemicals, has commissioned Kyp Systems to design and develop an iKyp – information to Keep in your pocket – to reinforce the important lessons learnt during a special ‘Safety Week’ and encourage their adoption in the workplace.
The Shell iKyp will be cascaded to Shell Downstream employees across more than 100 different countries and in ten different languages a couple of months after the completion of Safety Week. It will provide a digestible summary of the key elements in Shell’s Health and Safety culture programme to help maintain the momentum of everything learnt during Safety Week.
The iKyp will include information on the HSE Golden Rules (Compliance, Intervention, Respect) that Shell has developed to encourage staff to be more safety conscious & vigilant in the workplace. The main theme is ‘Leadership at Every Level’, with a focus on demonstrating personal leadership to ensure all employees participate in improving safety throughout the organisation.
Tim Wotton at Shell Downstream commented: “We have all experienced health and safety meetings at work, but how much of what we are told can we actually remember afterwards? Do we then translate these lessons into the workplace and take all of the necessary precautions to prevent accidents? Will we know how to react in an emergency?
He continued: “By distributing the iKyps after Safety Week has been completed we hope to remind employees of the importance of safety compliance and intervention on a continuous basis. Kyp Systems has developed a unique tool to summarise all of the key points of Safety Week in a fun and interactive way. Employees will then be able to hold onto their iKyps and refer back to them time and time again.”

“The information will be written in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Thai, Arabic and Chinese as communicating with our employees in their own language is key to ensuring that the lessons from Safety Week are taken on board across our global workforce.”

Nicholas Miller, CEO at Kyp Systems commented: “Shell wanted Kyp Systems to create a communications tool that would grab the attention of its staff and ensure that the lessons learnt from Safety Week were absorbed. With its eye-catching design, pullout leaflets and decision wheels, the iKyp has been designed to maximise retention. As such, it provides the perfect accompaniment to events like Shell Downstream’s Safety Week.”
